FDA Approves First New Flu Drug in 20 Years

The FDA approved Genentech's Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil), the first new influenza drug in nearly two decades. The single-dose oral drug is used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza in patients 12 years and older who have symptoms for no more than 48 hours. "If patients see their doctors within 48 hours of symptom onset, one dose of Xofluza can significantly reduce the duration of flu symptoms," said Dr. Sandra Horning, chief medical officer and head of global product development at Genentech.
