Treatment For This Eyelid Inflammation

{script_date format="%m/%d/%Y"}

Blepharitis is the medical term for a common condition associated
with inflammation of the eyelids. This condition can affect the outer or
inner eyelid margin. It is typically caused by bacteria or scalp dandruff.
Sufferers who experience red, scaly, thickened eyelids often complain of
itching, burning, and a sensation of something in the eye.

The goal of treatment is to control the inflammation and relieve associated
symptoms. This begins with good eyelid hygiene to keep the eyelids
clean and crust-free. Warm compresses are the mainstay of eyelid
hygiene and can be applied for 15-20 minutes, 2-4 times daily. Following
warm compresses, the eyelids should be scrubbed with a mild cleanser
such as water and baby shampoo. Before applying eyelid scrub, wash the
hands thoroughly, and apply 3-4 drops of cleanser to gauze pads or
cotton swabs. Close the eye and clean upper lid and lashes, then open
eye, look up and cleanse lower lid and lashes. Rinse lid and lashes with
clean, warm water. Additionally, dandruff shampoos should be used on
the hair if scalp dandruff is present. Prescription antibiotic or steroid eye
drops are prescribed for more severe blepharitis.
