A Common Cause for Work Absences

When compared with other illnesses, carpal tunnel syndrome is one
of the most common causes of absence from work. The carpal tunnel is a
small space or “tunnel” in the wrist formed by bones in the wrist bones
(carpal bones) and a ligament. The median nerve and several tendons
pass through the carpal tunnel from the forearm to the hand. This nerve
controls some movements of the thumb. It also supplies feeling to most
of the thumb and index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger.
Carpal tunnel syndrome results from conditions and activities that put
pressure on the median nerve and decrease its blood supply. This pressure
causes tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain in the fingers or, less
commonly, the palm.
Many health conditions and activities can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
One of the most common work related causes is from repetitive
movement of the fingers and hand, especially if the wrist is placed in an
awkward position. If you think you may have carpal tunnel syndrome,
see your doctor. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better the chances of
relieving the symptoms and preventing permanent damage to the median
nerve.
