Itchy skin is one of the most common ailments that we see. Many topical steroids are available for these symptoms. Many are available only by prescription. Others such as hydrocortisone are available over the counter. Dry skin can also contribute to itchy skin. Many dermatologists and doctors recommend hydrating creams for dry skin. Applying these creams right after showering can help to maintain hydration of the skin. Oral antihistamines can also help for itching. The most common is Benadryl. The downside of Benadryl is that it can cause quite a bit of drowsiness. Zyrtec and Claritin are also available over the counter and are less sedating. Drug-induced disorders are also common. Bactrim or other medications containing Sulfa can increase photosensitivity. Doxycycline can also increase photosensitivity. Some seizure medications can also cause a hypersensitivity condition known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The specific medications associated with this syndrome are Dilantin (phenytoin) and Tegretol (carbamazine). This syndrome is rare but is very seroius. Some acne medications can thin your skin and make it easier to get sunburn. Desquaming agents such as Retin-A and Differin are some of the prescription medications that are in this category. Using a sunscreen of at least 15 or higher is recommended when using a desquaming agent or when taking Sulfa or other medications that increase sensitivity to the sun. Of course, going to a suntan booth is not recommended either. This has just scatched the surface of this topic. See your health professional for more information
