FDA clears first contact lens with light-adaptive technology

FDA has cleared the first contact lens to incorporate an additive that automatically darkens the lens when exposed to bright light. The Acuvue Oasys Contact Lenses with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology, from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, are indicated for daily use to correct the vision of people with non-diseased eyes who are nearsighted or farsighted. The soft contact lenses can be used by individuals with certain degrees of astigmatism. These contacts, which are intended for daily wear for up to 14 days, should not be substitutes for UV protective eyewear. CDC estimates that more than 40 million Americans wore contact lenses as of 2014.
