A Saliva Test For Menopause Hormones
Menopause is a natural biological transition which most often occurs
in women between the ages of 45 and 55. Menopause occurs differently
in each individual woman. Hormonal, physical, and psychological changes
occur during this time. Some signs and symptoms of this life transition
include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, night sweats, and modest weight
gain. Women who are menopausal may experience irritability or fatigue,
as well as decreased memory or concentration. Treatment is aimed at
relieving symptoms, as well as preventing chronic conditions associated
with aging.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to manage the symptoms
associated with menopause. Hormones may be monitored through
blood tests and saliva tests, and treatment may be managed through an
HRT clinic. Saliva tests monitor levels of the hormones estradiol, progesterone,
testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol. The test is performed at home
and mailed to a laboratory. Test results are then sent to the HRT clinic or
physicians office for evaluation. Some of the signs and symptoms may
resolve without medical treatment.
