Treatment for Excess Hair Growth in Women

Treatment for Excess Hair Growth in Women

Hirsutism is a condition caused by a hormonal imbalance, specifically
an excessive production of androgens (typically testosterone) in women.
About 5 to 10 percent of women of child-bearing age are affected. The
excessive amount of androgens increase hair follicle size and hair fiber
diameter. The increased level of testosterone leads to increased hair
growth. Danazol, an androgen medication, may cause hirsutism. Race
and ethnicity also play a role in natural pattern and rate of hair growth.
The cause of the condition in some women may be unknown.

Although the condition does not pose a threat to the woman’s health,
treatment options are available for women who are uncomfortable with
the excess hair. Oral contraceptives containing ethinyl estradiol (Ortho-
Novum, Loestrin, many others) may be prescribed as an initial treatment.
Oral contraceptives work to decrease androgen levels by inhibiting luteinizing
hormone (LH) secretion and increasing production of sex hormonebinding
globulin (SHBG), which leads to decreased androgen levels.
Antiandrogen medications, such as spironolactone (Aldactone),
finasteride (Propecia), and dutasteride (Avodart) may be prescribed.
Women who take these medications must take precautions against pregnancy,
because harm to the fetus is possible.
