Ways to Manage Lactose Intolerance

Ways to Manage Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance may occur in people who have a deficiency of the
enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking down lactose. Lactose
is a sugar found in milk products. People who are lactose intolerant may
experience uncomfortable symptoms about thirty minutes to two hours
after consuming lactose-containing foods or beverages. Nausea, cramps,
bloating, gas, and diarrhea are all possible symptoms which range in
severity from person to person depending on factors such as age,
ethnicity, and rate of digestion.
A genetic link for lactose intolerance has been identified. The likelihood
of lactase deficiency is also increased in premature babies. While
there are no treatments available to increase lactase production by the
body, lactase in tablet and liquid form is available over-the-counter to be
taken with the first bite of lactose-containing food. Dietary control is also
an effective way to manage lactose intolerance. It is essential to meet
daily recommended amounts of calcium to maintain good health, either
through supplemental calcium or from foods such as dark green vegetables
or salmon.
