Grape Seed Extract and Leukemia

Grape Seed Extract and Leukemia

Grape seed extract is obtained from the seeds of grapes. The extract
has been used for health purposes as a laxative, to improve circulation,
heal wounds, and to treat heart and vision problems. It is also being
investigated currently for cancer prevention. Grape seed extract contains
compounds called proanthocyanidins. These substances neutralize free
radicals in the body. Free radicals are responsible for tissue damage and
cell death. Proanthocyanidins provide an antioxidant activity.

One recent study of the effects of grape seed extract on leukemia
(blood cancer) cells in a test tube showed that the extract activates a
protein called JNK. It is thought that this protein causes leukemia cells to
die. It is unclear if grape seed extract has the same effect in the human
body. The incidence of side effects in patients taking grape seed is low.
The most common complaints include dry, itchy scalp; headache; dizziness
and nausea. Grape seed extract may increase the risk of bleeding,
and should not be used by people who take other blood thinning medications
or supplements.
