Chamomile: Used in Medicines and Cosmetics

Chamomile is a plant that has been widely used throughout Germany and the Mediterranean for its medicinal and cosmetic properties. Plant parts are found in many topical products such as shampoo and soap. The dried plant is steeped in water and drunk as a tea. The German form of chamomile is the form used most commonly in the United States. This herb has been used to treat many illnesses; however, it is most commonly used to treat anxiety (or as a sedative), stomach disorders, and skin disorders. Chamomile possesses antianxiety, antispasmotic, and anti-inflammatory activities. It has been shown to be effective as a sedative, antidiarrheal agent, and as a topical agent in the treatment of eczema. As a tea, one teaspoonful of dried flowers is steeped in hot water for 10 minutes and drunk three times daily. Topical preparations of chamomile may be applied to the affected area as often as needed. People who are allergic to daisies, chrysanthemums, or ragweed should not use chamomile. In addition, chamomile should not be used with other medications or supplements that may cause drowsiness.
