Can Flaxseed Help Hot Flashes?
Traditionally, flaxseed has been used to treat many health problemssuch as constipation, inflammatory skin conditions, and heart problems. The seeds from the flax plant contain the essential fatty acid alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). Flaxseed also contains phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are derived from plants that exhibit estrogen-like activity in the body. One recent study evaluated the effectiveness of flaxseed supplementation on the frequency and severity of hot flashes in postmenopausal women. Twenty-nine women took 40 grams of crushed flaxseed daily for 6 weeks. At the end of the study, the frequency of hot flashes decreased by an average of 57% compared to the beginning of the study.
One tablespoon of whole flaxseed can be mixed with 6 to 12 ounces of liquid and taken up to 3 times daily. Flaxseed is generally well-tolerated; however, unripe flaxseed pods are poisonous and should not be consumed.
Flaxseed should be taken with plenty of water in order to avoid constipation. Since flaxseed may decrease the body’s ability to absorb medications taken orally, it should not be taken at the same time as other oral medications.
