Prescription Drugs May Improve Overactive Bladder

Overactive bladder is characterized by an uncomfortable and sudden urge to urinate. This occurs when a muscle of the bladder contracts more often than normal. Typically, the detrusor muscle remains at rest while the bladder fills with urine. However, in an overactive bladder, that muscle contracts while the bladder fills. The cause of this condition is unknown; however neurological diseases, stroke, and medication side effects may be causes. Persons with depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder may be more likely to experience the symptoms of this condition. Keeping a urination diary is a very useful diagnostic tool to help doctors make a diagnosis.

Antimuscarinics are one class of medication used to treat overactive bladder. Drugs in this class include hyoscyamine, oxybutinin, and tolterodine. They work by relaxing the detrusor muscle to prevent the bladder from contracting. Persons using medications for overactive bladder may also modify their behavior and lifestyle to help control this condition. Pelvic muscle exercises are helpful to reduce urge incontinence. Also, dietary changes such as decreasing caffeine and alcohol intake may be beneficial in decreasing the symptoms of overactive bladder. Losing weight and quitting smoking may also help control symptoms.
