Coenzyme Q-10 and Heart Failure Studied
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is part of a group of substances known as the ubiquinones. CoQ10 specifically is necessary for all basic cell functions in the body, such as energy production and cell protection. It exhibits antioxidant activity. We know that CoQ10 levels tend to decrease naturally with age; however, patients with heart failure have been shown to have decreased levels of CoQ10 regardless of age. Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart muscle progressively weakens. CoQ10 has been evaluated for its effects on persons with heart failure. Thus far, the evidence has been inconclusive. One recent study, however, may shed more light on the effect of CoQ10 on people with heart failure. After taking CoQ10 for 4 weeks, 23 people with heart failure experienced improved functional capacity during physical activity. Larger studies are needed.
