Help for Porous Bones

Osteoporosis is a condition of porous bones. In general, the bones are weak and more susceptible to breaking. Women are five times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men. This condition may be caused by genetics, too little calcium and vitamin D intake, or too little exercise. Women who are postmenopausal are more likely to develop osteoporosis. Bone density measurements can be used to help in diagnosing this condition. Preventive measures include getting enough calcium and vitamin D, and daily exercise. Avoiding cigarette smoking and excessive use of alcohol are also ways to help decrease the risk of getting osteoporosis.

Miacalcin is approved for women with osteoporosis who are at least 5 years beyond menopause. This medication may be taken as a nasal spray or as an injection under the skin. It is known that calcitonin increases spinal bone density, however the effects of this medication on risk of fracture are unknown. Evista works to prevent bone loss. This medication mimics the positive effects of estrogen on the bone, and could cause hot flashes and blood clots. Bisphosphonate type of drugs decrease the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women. Fosamax and Actonel are commonly prescribed bisphosphonates. They must be taken with a glass of water while remaining upright for 30 minutes after ingestion.
