Fish Oil and Brain Function in the Elderly

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for many functions of the body. They are building blocks for all body cells. These acids are broken down into other substances which are involved in blood clotting, digestion, muscle function, and the movement of calcium into and out of cells. Since Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be made by the body, they must be provided in a person’s diet. These compounds can be found in green leafy vegetables, nuts, eggs, organ meats, fish, and fish oils. Fish oil consumption is important for brain development and function.

Two recently published studies evaluated the effects of fish oil consumption on brain function in the elderly. One study evaluated consumption on cognitive (brain function) decline 2251 in older adults. Adults with the highest intake had a lower risk of declining brain function. The second study also examined the effects of fish oil consumption on the brain function of elderly adults. Again, adults with a higher intake of dietary fish oils had a lower rate of brain function decline during the five
year study period.
