Vitamin C May Be Useful For Tinnitus

Vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) is necessary for many bodily processes including the formation of bones, cartilage, and blood vessels. It is also necessary for the absorption of iron in the gut. The vitamin is found in fresh fruits and vegetables, and it is known for its antioxidant activity. Antioxidants protect cells in the body from damage caused by substances called reactive oxygen species (ROS). One recent study evaluated the effects of vitamin C on the condition known as tinnitus, a ringing in the ears. It has been theorized that ROS are responsible for the nerve cell damage associated with tinnitus. People with tinnitus have been shown to have high levels of ROS. Thirty-one individuals with tinnitus took a supplement containing various vitamins (including vitamin C) for 18 weeks. At the end of the study, the ROS levels were significantly lower, and the symptoms of tinnitus had improved.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin C for men ages 18 and older is 90mg. The recommended daily intake for women ages 18 and older is 75mg. Possible side effects include nausea, heartburn, stomach cramps, and headache.
